The past few weeks we've been battling high water, and I've been battling the last few weeks of my college career. Both are finally over.
The mountain streams are full and flowing clear. Bugs are everywhere on bright days and the fish are active and spunky. A guide trip mid-week last week with Garry and Michael from Richmond turned up several quality wild browns and rainbows, along with large numbers of smaller fish. Ongoing showers in the next week will keep the mountain streams fresh and the fishing hot, so I will run a few more trout trips this month before switching over to smallmouth floats until October. The water temperatures in the smallmouth rivers of western and southwestern Virginia are centered on the 60-degree mark, and the summer smallmouth season is nearly upon us. Isolated thunderstorms are elevating water levels slightly, but the New River is still at a fishable flow. Give me a shout if you want to float the river for these hard-fighting fish.
